Winter Scalp Conditions

As the winter season is upon us, it's important to properly care for your hair. The lack of humidity in the air makes it difficult to keep the hair from splitting, having static electricity, being unruly and generally hard to manage.
Simon Miller, KMS, California tells us that there are three commonly misdiagnosed scalp conditions for this time of year -

  1. Dry scalp - signs usually include dry flakes on the shoulders
  2. Psoriasis - a long term skin condition commonly showing red patches of skin that have silvery colored scales
  3. Dandruff - produces yellow or white scales attached to the scalp or hair shaft. Basically, it's an overproduction of sebum which is an excretion of our sebaceous glands

Both dandruff and dry scalp can be mistaken for the other and I recommend to drink plenty of water for hydration to prevent both of these while I recommend medical advice for psoriasis. So be sure to shampoo and condition your hair and scalp regularly to keep it healthy and shiny during the cold, dry air that is common in the winter season.
